Polished Floors

The timber floors are great but the timber polished floors are stunning. It is important to provide a regular floor maintenance to continue the glamorous look of your floors for years to come. You are probably wondering that having children at home will always ruin your glossy surface.

However, unless someone will seriously damage the polished floors, the material can be kept at top-notch. The "naughty kids" may only increase the number of maintenance jobs rather then to prevent you to have the high quality polished flooring.

Polished Floors Maintenance

To perform floor polishing you need to clean the surface of the old floor, protect the skirtings and get into a heavy sanding. Depending on the damage, you will probably use a drum sander with 40-grit sand paper. For lighter effects, 80-grit is sufficient. The severely damaged polished floors may need to be "treated" with 24-grit sand paper. Remember, if your kids did damage the floor (and you have the drum sander in your hands) then ensure that they visit their grandmother (for their safety!). The drum sander is heavy and can notch the floorboards. Thus, ensure that you work the machine from the soft touch to the level of friction which you fill is adequate.

Next, you vacuum the debris and get into the finer sanding action. Here 80-grit to 120-grit sand paper will suffice. If the drum sander is to big for the job, then try to use the rotary sander / polisher. Vacuum the dust and proceed with the first coat of the timber finish. Within couple of hours the first finish will be dry and you can sand/polish it with the 100-150 grit paper. Again, vacuuming must follow. The second coat of the finish will look very good on these polished floors. Many tradesmen put even a third coat to enhance that glossy, spectacular look.

Polished Floors Care

There are ways to continuously care for you floors. The most effective method to keep polished floors at the top condition is a paste wax. The material is available in hardware stores and can be applied with special machines. One of them is a Koblenz floor polisher.

The average quality floor polishers cost around $200 a piece and come with reusable discs. Two disks and 2 retainers sell for about $10. In the areas where there is little traffic you need to wax your polished floors 2-3 times a year. For more frequently used areas, you should apply the polisher weekly. Commercial complexes perform this duty even daily.

Concrete Polished Floors

We have been nagging about the timber polished floors. However, wood is not the only material which can have the stunning appearance. Concrete polished floors are increasingly popular. For starters they do not need expensive tiles, carpets and the timber. The maintenance of the concrete polished floors is one of the simplest and long lasting.

Simply put, concrete polished floors are inexpensive but reliable option for stunning results. Polished concrete is treated with densifier and the ground. To achieve fantastic results, concrete is grinded to the 400 grit level. However, as the material becomes popular, higher grades (1500-3000 grit) sanding options are not uncommon. What's more, there are plenty of design options which are a far cry from the boring concrete as we know it.
